March in Santorini is the month when spring comes to our island. In March, there are fewer cloudy days and less precipitation, and the closer to the end of the month, the clearer the changes in the weather become. And if the temperature is not so high yet and ranges around +12 … +14 degrees during the night hours, but during the day the air sometimes gets as warm as +20 degrees, creating a pleasant feeling when combined with the sun!

During the first month of spring, the temperature on the island rises slightly, both during the day and at night. Generally, the weather in Santorini in early March already feels like summer is approaching – at least on sunny and warm days. Yes, it can still be quite cool during some nights, when the thermometer dips even to +10 degrees, but starting from the middle of the month and closer to the second half of March, nighttime temperatures tend to +15 … +17 degrees. During the day the air may get warm up to +20 degrees, and especially on sunny days up to +22 degrees!
In the second half of March, the weather in Santorini becomes more stable. However, there may still be a few sudden changes between drizzle and sunshine within the same day.

Just note that March in Santorini is not the best choice for a beach holiday. However, sightseeing programs and trips around the island will certainly be enjoyable, as it is springtime!

Even though the weather in Santorini in March already marks the beginning of the spring season, both air and water temperatures are still relatively low at this time of year. It is recommended to bring warm clothes and a waterproof windbreaker.
Daytime temperatures fluctuate at an average of about +16 degrees. Typically, during the first week of the month, temperatures are lower. In the second half of the month, the air heats up to +18 degrees in the shade, and in the sun, it is advisable to use sunscreen with at least SPF 10 to avoid getting burnt.
March nighttime temperatures are less pleasant, averaging at +14 degrees. Combined with the wind, it may not be very comfortable. However, it is still fine to meet the sunset and walk for another hour on the promenade at the caldera, especially if you dress a little warmer.

Regarding temperature records, in March there was a record high of +25 degrees in the shade, which felt like +30 degrees in the sun. The coldest day was marked by a temperature of only +2 degrees, which is a very rare occurrence.
Usually the weather in March in Santorini begins to enjoy a calmer atmosphere: although March on our island is one of the most windy months of the year, the number and strength of the winds begins to decrease noticeably. Nevertheless, windy days are not uncommon at all, it feels like every other one, so a hoodie or a windbreaker is our best friend this month 🙂
In March, we experience winds of about 6-8 meters per second if you are familiar with quantitative characteristics. If it is overcast and raining, it is not very pleasant. However, if it is sunny, there are no issues.

Toward the end of March, sea temperatures also begin to rise, so beach lovers can not only walk along the sea, but even take a dip and swim. Sunny days and precipitation in Santorini in March
March on the island usually has good weather with many sunny days, although cloudy and overcast days are not uncommon. At least half of March is typically sunny, if not more.
The number of sunny hours also increases, and quite noticeably. In March, Santorini you can expect 12 hours of sunshine:
In early March the sun rises on the island at about 6:50, and sunset in Santorini in March can be observed at 18:10. Near the end of the month there is a change to daylight saving time, so sunrise occurs at about 7:00 and sunset at the end of March at 19:40.

The rains in March in Santorini are unfortunately very likely. Of course, this is by no means the rainiest month of the year: the formal rainy season is over, but cloud cover still gathers over the island, and sometimes this results not only in overcast weather, but also in quite serious rain.
During March, Santorini receives relatively low precipitation, with only around four centimeters falling. This is one and a half to two times less than the amount received during the winter months.

What can be useful for holidays in Santorini in March
Let’s face it: the weather in Santorini during March is not ideal for a beach holiday. Swimming should not be expected as the bathing season does not open until next month. It is recommended to bring summer clothes, including at least T-shirts, and something warmer for the evenings and overcast weather.
