February is the middle of winter on the island and the weather in Santorini in February is very similar to the previous month. The water in our sea cools down to just +16 degrees, but the good news is that the temperature drop stops there – soon it will only get warmer! As for the air temperature, from mid-February it also usually begins to increase gradually.
Sometimes Santorini gets a little warmer during the day and at night in February, but most of the time it is a cold and wet month.
If there was one more month of the year that could compete with the January’s gloom, it would be February, or rather its first half 🙂
What is the weather like in Santorini in February
At some nights (and especially at the beginning of the month) it can be quite cool on the island, when the thermometer goes down to +8 degrees, but on average the night temperatures are around +13 … +15 degrees.
During the day the air can get up to +18 degrees and even a little higher. However, this is an exception and a rarity. You should not rely on it.

And if the air can still get warmer, you can’t expect anything more from the sea in February – we have the coldest month of the whole year.

Our island is located in the Mediterranean climate zone, which is usually characterized by relatively cool winters and an average rainfall. We will tell you about the precipitation later, but as for temperatures, February is likely to be disappointing: the first half of the month is often quite cool, which combined with a strong wind does not give the most pleasant feeling.
If it’s a nice day, when the sun shines in the morning, the air can get very warm – up to +18 degrees. On average, however, you should focus on an air temperature of +15 degrees:
February is one of the coldest months of the year (and sometimes the coldest), so night walks will not be comfortable: +14 degrees – and it would be great if the night is calm and windless!
As for the wind: in February, northwest winds often blow on the island, so warm air masses should not be expected.
Based on our experience, we have found that one-third of the days on the island this month are windy, with strong gusts. It is recommended to wear warm and windproof clothing.

If we remember something about our local winter records, the temperature maximum in February was an impressive +22 degrees in the shade! But as for “frosts”, although this is an extremely rare phenomenon, there were times when the temperature dropped to -1 degree at night. For us it’s so freezing! 🙂

Is it possible to swim in Santorini in February? You can, of course, but it’s hard to talk about any comfort. In short: February is not suitable for a beach holiday. For most visitors, the maximum is to walk barefoot on the water along the sea line 🙂

Sunny days and precipitation in Santorini in February
February in Santorini is one of the top three (well, okay, four) darkest months of the year. On average we have about 10 hours of sunshine a day, which, on the one hand, is not much, but if you remember that we are talking about winter, the situation becomes more positive 🙂
At the beginning of the month the sunrise on the island occurs approximately at 7:20, and the sunset in Santorini in February can be seen as early as 17:40.
Closer to the end of the month, the time changes: you have to wake up early, because the sunrise is around 6:50, while the sunset will be a little later – about 18:15.

It rains quite often. The weather in Santorini in February definitely places this month in the top three cloudiest and wettest months of the year. Typically, there are 5 to 6 rainy days during the month, although this can vary from year to year.
Anyway, considering that February is a short month, it rains here at least every fourth day.
The amount of precipitation is still noticeable: usually about 5-6 centimeters of rain falls in a month. That’s a lot. This amount brings happiness only to farmers 🙂

The end of winter is always one of the wettest periods of the year on our island, so be prepared to open umbrellas, which, by the way, should be held very tightly 🙂
What can be useful for holidays in Santorini in February
In February, Santorini starts to feel the approach of spring, particularly towards the end of the month. However, if you plan to visit the island during this time, make sure to bring warm and windproof clothing for a comfortable vacation.
The end of February is perfect for sightseeing, in addition, the island will slowly be covered with green and flowers: believe us, it is a very unusual phenomenon for a volcano island.
What exactly do not need to count on is swimming in the sea: although we bathe, but only on the hottest days, only at the beach of Kamari and only if we have a strong desire to do so 🙂
