The village of Vlychada is on the south shore of our island, and if you’re staying in Fira or nearby and are choosing a beach to spend your time on before noon, this bus route is perfect for you.
You can take a bus from Fira to the black beach of Vlychada early in the morning and be back by lunchtime. The distance between Fira and Vlychada is quite short – only about 12 kilometers, and if you don’t get caught in the traffic of tourist buses when leaving the capital, the whole route will take no more than 20 minutes!
Intercity routes as well as all bus services in Santorini are operated by KTEL, so the cost of such a trip will be very, very low.
Bus route from Fira to Vlychada
Santorini’s bus routes look like a flower with petals diverging from its center. The main bus station is in the center of the island, where all trips start and where all transfers take place.
After leaving Fira, the bus to Vlychada passes the village of Megalochori, from which you can access the beaches of Thermi and Plaka, as well as the wineries of Venetsanos and Santo Wines. From the capital to Vlychada, buses start running at 7:00, and there are no more than three or four trips a day. This is the most recent (December 2024) updated bus timetable provided by KTEL Santorini:

It takes approximately 20-25 minutes to get from Fira to Vlychada by bus. Please note that the travel time can increase significantly during the high season, when traffic jams are not uncommon on the roads of our island.
The last bus from Fira to Vlychada departs at 14:00. There are no night buses on this route.
KTEL Santorini sometimes makes changes to the bus timetable – and in some cases several times during the week. Always check the bus schedule before you travel, or better yet, take the early buses that are more likely to get you to your destination on time

The bus ride from Vlychada to Fira usually takes about 20-25 minutes as well.
The bus service between the cities ends at 14:30, and there are no night routes.
Bus ticket prices and how to buy tickets from Fira to Vlychada in 2024
The bus fare from Fira to Vlychada in 2024 is 2.50 euro. This is the most expensive route on the island 🙂 If you only need to go to Megalochori, the fare is 1.80 euro. You can buy tickets directly from the bus driver or conductor.
There is no extra charge or any special luggage tickets required. A bus ticket from Fira to Vlychada for children up to and including six years of age is not required – we have them ride free, and the price of a bus ticket for children aged seven to twelve years inclusive will be half the full price of a bus ticket on that route.

Five importanFive important things about the bus timetable from Fira to Vlychada
We want to share five basic facts you should know about bus routes between Fira and Vlychada village and on our island in general:
- The central bus stop in Santorini is located in Fira, the heart of the island and its capital. It is the main bus station.
- All buses in Santorini take their routes from there and return there as well.
- You can get from almost any other part of the island and back on regular buses, but you almost always have to go through the central bus station and make a connection there.
- Bus timetables are different at weekends and also during the winter season (especially!). The gaps between buses can be an hour and a half or two hours instead of half an hour, and sometimes more. In general, the bus schedule on the island is quite… unstable and conditional. Sometimes it can change twice a week. Sad, but true.
- You can buy bus tickets in the bus for cash (euros). It is better to prepare in advance coins or small banknotes of 5 or 10 euros.
